| "If you are bothered by such trends in our society as lack of respect, vandalism, and disrespect of property and personal rights, then you are experiencing the common concerns of teachers all over the nation. We, too, are concerned! When discussing today's children with classroom teachers and parents, we found the problems to have more similarities than differences. Lack of responsibility, inability to make decisions, endless conflicts, negative behavior patterns, and unsatisfactory personal relationships are recurring topics. Recurring because there seem to be no answers to these problems. It is our belief that there is a better way of classroom management than either the old authoritarian approaches or the newer more permissive techniques. This different way is based on the premise of mutual respect and self-responsibility. It is designed to give kids "a piece of the action." This book provides a program designed to help you, the teacher, prepare for and set up your classroom at the beginning of the year, teach children to make better decisions, solve conflicts more satisfactorily, stimulate the imagination of your children, initiate the evaluating process, and work effectively with parents. We feel that the concepts are interrelated and each is essential for the development of a responsible classroom. Partial use is possible, but less effective. We have also included many different classroom activities for use with each concept. It is not intended that you use every idea. It is intended that you select the ones which will fit best in your situation. What is presented on the following pages is not a quick and easy solution for all classroom "ills." It provides tried and effective solutions to many classroom problems. However, miracles don't happen easily. You'll find that you yourself may change your usual of thinking and acting. With time, patience, and practice you'll get your onw "piece of the action." [from introduction by Arden, JoAnn, and Marcia] |
